This is a charming introduction to Marie Curie. In simple language, the author conveys the accomplishments of Curie (her daughter and husband as well) and the controversy she evoked by discovering radium, the most radioactive element on the planet, and because she was a woman. This is a very cursory overview of her life but it covers everything from her birth, her love of Poland, her decision to be a scientist and to start the radium lab. The problems of radiation are only briefly covered at the end of the book. The focus is both on her life as a mother and scientist and on her discoveries. There are bold words throughout the text with definitions at the end and boxes throughout the text that elaborate more fully on complex topics. This is an excellent little book for a young adult with an interest in either Curie or physics. It will not suffice as a primer for understanding the science behind Curie's work.

This is a very well written book, presenting the biography of Marie Curie, her scientific discoveries, and the historical events that have marked her life. Excellent book for the young reader interested in the physical sciences. My daughter (11 years old) loved it.
